Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also famous studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from the Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.
In 1981, Toto's third album Turn Back was a flop However, they resurface with their fourth release Isolation with two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour helped them become a household name across the globe.
After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is an departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. The album was their first to go platinum in North America.
During the recording process of the fifth album The group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name a different producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour around the world. After a few weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa on a recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

The band broke up following this. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to benefit the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in more than 31 years that all of Toto's founding members performed together. In addition to the original members, keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

The album marked a return to form for the band, and the tour accompanied it with sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was made more exciting by the addition of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, who both rejoined the band.
